The future is now for the next generation of leadership. This panel features four dynamic leaders of Chinese descent who ran for office between the ages of 17 and 28—with historic victories marking 2026 as Year One of political empowerment for second-generation Chinese Americans. Proving they are ready to lead, these trailblazers will share their campaign experiences, serving as powerful role models to inspire our youth to step up and shape American civic life.

Supervisor Chyanne Chen
Supervisor Chyanne Chen is an immigrant and mother, representing District 11 of San Francisco. Supervisor Chen was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2024, and is committed to supporting youth, families, seniors, accessible education, advocating for affordable housing, and championing immigrant and workers' rights.

Oliver Ma is an immigrant, civil rights lawyer, and candidate for California Lieutenant Governor. A graduate of UC Berkeley, Harvard Law School, and Harvard Kennedy School, he previously worked at the ACLU of Southern California. He also founded the Asian Youth Liberty League (ALLY), a nonprofit focused on youth leadership and civic engagement.
Ellen Zhang has served on the Madison Common Council since 2026, advocating for greater representation in local government. A student at UW–Madison studying Sociology, Economics, and Gender & Women's Studies, she focuses on affordability and accessibility. She has also worked in education nonprofits, public service, and international exchange programs.
Minja Yan is a commercial real estate professional and candidate for Clark County Commissioner, District F. She has contributed to the Chinatown Redevelopment Plan in Las Vegas and advocated for transportation and infrastructure policy in Nevada. She serves on local nonprofit boards with a focus on economic development, housing, and regional planning.
Mark Li is a rising senior at River Hill High School in Maryland and serves as the 39th Student Member of the Howard County Board of Education. He chairs Community Initiatives for the Maryland Youth Advisory Council under the Governor's Office for Children. Mark is a student journalist, musician, and emerging civic leader.
